Fire Prevention Week
Sunday, October 7, 2018
October 7-13 is Fire Prevention Week. For the past three consecutive years the
National Fire Protection Association has focused awareness on smoke
detectors. For 2018 they have shifted
the message to situational awareness with the banner “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware – fire can happen anywhere.”
This year’s theme identifies basic but essential ways we all
can reduce our risk to fire and be prepared in the event of one.
- ·Look for places fire can start (portable heater
less than 3 ft. from combustibles? Overloaded power cord? Chimney flue not
cleaned in years?)
- · Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm (don’t
ignore - call 911)
- · Learn two ways out of each room (windows count
on the first floor)
This is first-rate guidance applicable not only while at
home but wherever you may be.
Lastly, in the spirit of Fire Prevention Week, remember to
check your smoke detectors monthly and dust off your exit plan in the event of
a fire.
